Hi, This term Ms Jenkins’ 6th class took part in an exciting STEM project in conjunction with the local college, TU Dublin – Tallaght. Two engineers from the college, Gerry & Lucy, visited our classroom every Friday for four weeks. The children engaged in STEM activities in the classroom. Dingle Jam 25/9/19 One day in Sacred Heart SNS Ms Mayes 6th class went to the cookery room to make raspberry jam. We made raspberry jam with Ms Gleason. We had to get raspberry’s put them in a pot and mash them up. We had to wait until it started boiling. We then measured out our sugar and put it in the oven and wait for five minutes it was really fun.  We added the sugar to the jam and left it to simmer in the pot. At the end of the 2018 school year, 6th class held a bake sale to raise money for two special causes. The children managed to raise just over €1,000. Half of the money went to the Peter McVerry Trust and the rest for new school equipment. As seen in the photograph, new weighing scales and microwave were purchased for the kitchen. A set of yoga mats were bought for our new yoga classes. Some of this money will also be spent on the school toilets. Mindfulness with 6th Class

This year all of us in  6th class  are doing a Mindfulness course with the 6th class teachers. I was in the first group chosen to do this class. We do it in the Sensory Room every Monday afternoon. We sit on our Yoga mats and close our eyes. We listen to relaxing music and our teacher talks us through calming strategies that help us to feel very peaceful and chilled. Using the website Weather Whiz Kids we found a wide variety of facts about what a blizzard is and how snow and ice are created. What are snowflakes? Snowflakes are made of ice, each snowflake is made up of as many as 200 ice crystals. Some snow crystals are symmetrical. Snowflakes will form only if the temperature is below 0 Celsius. They make those shapes because that is how water molecule form when they freeze. Otherwise they are small and irregularly shaped. They rotate and they become heavier as they fall towards Earth.
