5th Class Gardening

5th Class Gardening

We went to the garden for the first time this year with Deirdre on the 19th of September. We began by talking to Deirdre about the different insects that live in the garden. She had found a caterpillar on her car that morning and brought it in on her coat to show us. He was small and green and he was called a looper caterpillar. We also talked about some of the birds and animals that might live in the school garden. One of the birds we learned about was the Blue Tit bird. We looked at all the different types of leaves in the garden and discussed their shapes and how they felt. We saw the raspberry trees and some of us tasted the ripe raspberries. They were really nice. Next Deirdre showed us the different tools we would be using eg. Fork, spade, rake and trowel. Some of us got gardening gloves and then we got to work. We had a lot of weeding to do so we got into groups and began digging and pulling weeds. We had to remember to shake the clay off the roots before putting them into the wheelbarrow. Some people found onions when we were digging and they took them inside to try them. We were very tired after all our hard work but we had lots of fun. We are all looking forward to the next day we get to go out
